Post subject:  Prescription drugs in Costa Rica

I see plenty of posts about procuring "little blue" in Costa Rica, but what about other prescription drugs? Anyone grab up any goodies while there?

Yes, generally drugs that are not controlled substances in the US are available in CR w/o a script. Prices are attractive - Amoxicillin 500 mg for $0.37 US. If staying at the SL see the desk. They will hook you up with a neighborhood pharmacia with a 10 percent discount. There are a couple a block or so from the Presedente.

Certain types of drugs are quite strictly controlled, even moreso than in the USA. Valium type drugs would be a good example. They have a computerized system to control 'psychotropics' here. There are ways to get around this if you're willing to pay for a Dr visit, but that's true in the USA too. You can get codeine mixed with acetomenaphen over the counter, but stronger pain killers are also restricted.

If you are just looking for antibiotics, anti cholestorol or acid reflux medicines, you can get them all over the counter. If you are looking to catch a 'buzz' it's not much different than back in the States.

Personally I like the system for dispensing legal drugs better here in CR than the States. Here you are allowed to take more responsiblity for your own body. Viagra (and it's generics) is a good example. Here you can just walk into a farmacia and get all you want at slightly over $2 each. There is no prescription necessary. Any normal person that started feeling bothersome side effects would know enough to see a Doctor. In the US you first need to make an appointment with a Doctor in order to get a prescription. This can sometimes take months. Then you have to pay the Doctor for what amounts to a chat with him winking at you that you are a "dirty old man".($200-300) Then,of course the prescription is only good for a year os so,at which point the Doctor "needs to see you AGAIN" in order to track your progress with the medication AND EXTRACT ANOTHER FEE.Now you can either find generics or fork over the $9+ for each pill. Also the Doctors don't quite understand mongering and prescribe the normal amount that a Gringo needs for his Gringa Bitch. (a monthly supply is what some mongers use in a couple of days while on vacation in SJ) This isn't my conspiracy theory but facts. The AMA and drug companies have a system in the US that is dragging the Country into bankruptcy. Oh and let's not forget the Insurance companies who are exacerbating the problem.

I say all this even though I spent my entire career in the Insurance business and my father was a Pharmacist.

Well put, Vegasbob. The only thing I do NOT like down here is the fact that you can't just get something like acetomenaphen in quantity nor just take it off the shelf. I went to Price Smart looking for it and the best I could do was about 50, each giant tablet individually wrapped and I had to have the pharmacist get it for me. Other than that, I like the system here a lot better.
